We can talk about the weather, or we can ask the deeper questions that open the door to laughter and to intimacy. Below are some questions to get you started. If you like this general concept, try the game by Esther Perel called “Where Should We Begin?”

Who?

  • Who would you take with you on a month-long trip to outer space?
  • Who would you like to switch places with for a day?
  • Who influences you more, your friends or your family?
  • Who would you rather be stuck on a bus with: A sports team, a choir, a debate team, a dance troupe, or the cast members of a play?
  • Who is the last person you had a disagreement with?
  • Who would you rather be in a group setting: The first person or the last person to answer a question?
  • Who would you prefer as a teammate: Someone who is highly creative, intensely hardworking, an excellent communicator, or a natural leader?
  • Who would you call if you were in serious trouble?

What?

  • What would you do if you knew you would not fail?
  • What do you think are the three most important professions in society?
  • What is the best idea you’ve ever had?
  • What song do you wish you had written?
  • What food would you eat if you had to eat the same thing every day for the next six months?

How?

  • How accurately do you predict the time it will take to do a project?
  • How long do you usually hold grudges?
  • How long is too long to keep someone waiting?
  • How often do you talk with your parents?
  • How have you changed the most in the last five years?

When?

  • When was the last time you changed your mind about something?
  • When was the last time you rolled on the floor laughing?

Why?

  • Why are families not run by majority rule?
  • Why did the chicken cross the road?
