Almost any creative task can be satisfying if you enjoy the process as much as the outcome.

People have been squirreling away valuables since the Dawn of Time. While nowadays you can easily buy safes, lockboxes, and other secure containers, sometimes the most effective method is to “hide something in plain sight.” Secret compartments allow you to do just that and are also fun to make.

You don’t need something elaborate like a safe behind a painting or a bookshelf that opens into a secret chamber. Simple ideas from the past work just as well and it can be a fun and interesting challenge to adapt these yourself. Below are some ideas to choose from, but you may have other ideas that are just as viable:

  • A hollowed out dictionary (or other large book): Use a razor to cut a rectangle out of the center of the book’s pages. Leave a 1-inch margin around all edges of the page, and leave the first and last thirty or so pages uncut. This forms a hollow “box” for stashing your valuables.
  • An emptied-out clock: Remove the mechanical guts from a clock and use the empty interior as a hiding spot.
