Sometimes it takes just the seed of an idea to jump-start the creative process.

The most well-known and instantly recognizable coat of arms is probably the one for the House of Windsor⏤the royal family of England. Even though a traditional coat of arms represents accomplishments on the battlefield, you can put a modern twist on it and design a shield to tell the story of your family values.

  1. Begin by writing down a list of words that describes the shared values and ideals that your family holds or aspires to. Doing this with other family members is the ultimate fun, and you might even learn something about each other that you didn’t know. Are you a brave family, a hardworking family, or a lucky family? Are you creative, disciplined, inventive? Are you visionaries, caretakers, leaders? Consensus builders, explorers, risk takers?
  2. Next, think of universal ways to convey and express the words on your list. For example, what colors, shapes, designs, and patterns are associated with your family values? What birds, animals, plants, or mythical creatures evoke these traits?
  3. Finally, do your best to express this all visually by drawing or painting your family coat of arms. If you can’t draw a straight line, no worries⏤print out images from online and paste them together to make a collage.
