I rise and fall gently,
in rhythm with the waves.
They pass through me and by me,
and I hear them meet the land,
one wave after another,
after another, after another.
The weightlessness
is intoxicating.
A crow walks the water’s edge.
A turtle raises its head to the sun.
I could stand
if I wanted to.
I look to the shore.
I trust you completely.
***
I am lifted up
and thrown back down,
caught up in the crashing
of the waters.
Waves toss me back and forth,
handing me off,
one wave to another,
to another, to another.
It’s ocean forever
in every direction.
Miles and miles
of empty horizon.
I’m in way over my head.
I don’t trust you at all.
***
If I knew how to swim
I would save myself.
If I knew how to trust
I would let you save me.
A cluster of seeds float by me
unconcerned with their destination.
