There are a limitless number of ways to hit the Reset button.

Habitual patterns of thought, like a tendency to think negatively or to worry excessively, are like scripts that play out automatically. The best way to flip these scripts is to interrupt them altogether. The next time you need to hit the Reset button, simply roll a set of dice, and pick one item from the list below that corresponds to the number you rolled. By the time you complete the task, your thinking will be renewed.

TWO (2): EXERCISE

  • Walk for 1 hour
  • Dance to 20 upbeat songs
  • Do 10 sets of 100 jumping jacks

THREE (3): SILLINESS

  • Watch a stand-up comedy
  • Spend time with a young child
  • Watch a kid’s movie

FOUR (4): MAGIC OF MUSIC

  • Practice playing an instrument
  • Listen to your favorite album
  • Drum for a half hour (on anything!)

FIVE (5): UPLIFTING WORDS

  • Write a thank you letter
  • Tell someone exactly what you love about them
  • Encourage someone

SIX (6): SERVICE

  • Make someone their favorite meal
  • Do a chore for someone
  • Run an errand for someone

SEVEN (7): TOGETHERNESS

  • Invite a family member to dinner
  • Hold a potluck for friends
  • Pick up the phone and call someone

EIGHT (8): GIFT GIVING

  • Give someone one of your precious personal items
  • Create a custom playlist for someone
  • Make a coupon for someone

NINE (9): CREATIVE PLAY

  • Make something out of papier-mâché, wood, metal, or fabric
  • Write a poem, song, or short story
  • Draw the scene/view out your window

TEN (10): CLEANING OR CLEARING

  • Sweep and mop all of your floors
  • Do 1 hour of yard work
  • Wash all of your windows

ELEVEN (11): NATURAL EXPERIENCES

  • Visit a lake, stream, river, or ocean
  • Walk in the woods
  • Visit an aviary, an arboretum, or a botanical garden

TWELVE (12): LEARNING

  • Browse at a library or bookstore
  • Watch a how-to video
  • Listen to an instructional podcast
