Upon careful inspection, you may find that today is a completely new day, as unique as you are, and filled with endless possibilities and tremendous potential, whether it’s your first day, your 19,000th, or your last.
Right down the river from the Island of Misfit Toys is the Island of Dreams Deferred and the Island of Unexecuted Ideas. Many thriving businesses, time-saving inventions, and powerful creative works live on these isolated islands. Up and down their coastlines are workshops and maker spaces filled with tinkering creators polishing and perfecting their creations.
The imagination is such a dynamic and comfortable environment, it’s not surprising that many people do their best work there, cultivating and tending to their ideas like working in an eternal garden. It’s the ultimate low risk/high reward environment: A space with no boundaries and no barriers (there are no business licenses required in the realm of the imagination); a space with no failure and no judgement (there are no customer reviews in the realm of the imagination). No wonder so many ideas never leave these islands⏤their creators simply won’t let them. They are captives.
Consider making today the day that you let some of your ideas go free, sending them out into the world for others to see, enjoy, love, ignore, ridicule, embrace, adore, or dismiss. Leaving the comfort of creative isolation is terrifying⏤until you actually do it and realize no one is judging you as much as you judge yourself. Everything has a beginning, so start something today⏤even something very small⏤and see where it leads. Why not? You won’t even walk this earth in 100 years (maybe less). Do it now while you can.
Your days and years here among the living are your turn at life, your slice of history’s ever-unspooling ribbon, your brief moment on the stage. You won’t be writing poems from the grave or opening a community center from the great beyond. Surely there is some idea or fanciful dream⏤some deep creative yearning⏤that has been following you around like a stubborn ghost for years, haunting you, nipping at you, asking over and over to be created and brought to life. If you wait for the perfect moment, for the optimal conditions, that day may never actually come. So the question is, “Why not today?”
