“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.” ⏤Anaïs Nin
“I decided to take a leap of faith.” This beautiful cliché is exceptionally short and sweet, but as with most clichés, there is more to it than meets the eye. A leap of faith is not a baby step or a small hop. It is an energetic jump which hurls you from one reality to something else entirely. It is a definitive action preceded by a firm decision.
When taking a leap of faith, you can rely on:
- Faith in yourself (jumping across a chasm and trusting that your skill or physical prowess will carry you successfully to the other side).
- Faith in technology (jumping out of an airplane and trusting that your parachute will open).
- Faith in others (jumping out of a burning building and trusting that the people below will catch you).
- Faith in a Higher Power (any or all of the above situations).
Whichever system of faith underscores and animates your daring jump, a leap of faith is, first and foremost, a radical change taken in trust.
Taking a leap of faith is moving ahead without knowing the outcome. It’s going, willingly, from the known to the unknown, from the certain to the uncertain. It’s being curious enough about the road not taken to finally just take it and see where it leads.
Taking a leap of faith is discerning when it’s time for old things to come to an end and for new things to begin. It’s trusting your intuition that a part of your life has fully run its course, and that it’s time to nurture the seedlings of a new reality.
Taking a leap of faith is trusting that if a teacher is needed, a teacher will appear, and that if a net is needed, a net will appear. It’s knowing, deep in your heart, that everything you need will be provided, and that you are capable of making it up as you go.
Taking a leap of faith is understanding that when people say it can’t be done, what they really mean is that they can’t do it, not that you can’t do it. It’s having a sense of imagination and courage in spite of the inevitable obstacles.
Whether you are standing at the edge of a great divide, at the open door of an airborne plane, or by the window of a burning building, trust in the powers that brought you to this moment, and jump! You just might land somewhere completely unexpected and amazing.
