If you want water to move uphill, be prepared to do some work.
Nature has always been a great teacher. The parallels between our lives and the lives of the wild are instructive. It’s no accident that some people are called sharks or badgers, or that others are compared to owls or lions. Every observable truth of nature has some wisdom to impart: Plants can sprout up through the rockiest of soil if given the right nutrients and sunlight. Every squirrel, ant, and spider is trying to make a decent living just like you are. The ecosystem is always in flux. There is a niche for everyone. Left to its own devices, water will go where it wants to.
Before you move to a neighborhood you are unfamiliar with, it is suggested that you go there at several different times of day (and night) to get a sense of its natural rhythm. The same logic applies to buying a piece of land. Walk the land on a beautiful, sunny day, and walk it again during a raging downpour. Watching the water go where it wants to will tell you more about the property than any written description of it⏤and once you understand the water, you know where on the site to build, and whether the land will let you do all the things you imagine doing with it.
Watching water flow downward, moving in accordance with its own nature, cutting channels of least resistance through the earth, is like watching law in motion. If you want to redirect the natural flow or stop it altogether, be prepared to put in a tremendous amount of time, labor, and material. Better to let water do its own thing. You may nudge it gently or contain its movement more tightly, but if you ask it to change direction completely, it may decline, or laugh in your face.
So, too, with your own natural rhythms. You likely have times of day when you are⏤by your own nature⏤at your very finest. These are the magic hours when you are firing on all cylinders creatively, emotionally, and spiritually. Your awareness is high. Your discernment is high. You are connected to your Source, and your unique assortment of gifts and aptitudes is within easy reach. In contrast, there are times of day when you don’t feel like yourself, when you would rather be removed from the hum of life and human interaction; times when you could muster the energy to listen and observe, but would rather not engage and contribute.
You have to watch how the water flows in your own life, and understand the natural law of your true self. It’s worth understanding this, and aligning your life with your natural rhythms, no matter how much they are like, or unlike, the lives of other people. If you are at your best at 5 in the morning, then do your work, and pursue your goals, at 5 in the morning. To march to the beat of your own drum is to go with the flow of your own, natural rhythm.
